Midwest Open Imaging's Lifeguard Vascular Screening can help determine your risk for stroke, aneurysm, or leg pain caused by decreased blood flow. Lifeguard consists of three painless, non-invasive scans by a trained ultrasound technologist. A board-certified radiologist then reviews the scans, generates a report of the findings, and alerts you if any further medical evaluation is needed.
What are the three Lifeguard Screenings?
Lifeguard is a series of ultrasound scans that check for these vascular problems:

Carotid Artery Disease The carotids are two major arteries that supply blood to your brain (figure A, left). As you age, plaque buildup can narrow and stiffen your arteries, sometimes disturbing blood flow. Carotid Artery Disease is a serious health condition, and is one of the most common causes of stroke. In its earliest stages, Carotid Artery Disease may not cause symptoms. For more information on Carotid Artery Disease, click this link.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) The aorta is the largest blood vessel in your body, running from your heart down the middle of your chest and abdomen (figure B, left). When a weak area of your aorta bulges, it is called an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, or AAA. This condition is often called the "silent killer" because patients usually have no symptoms of the disease. Aneurysms are dangerous because they can rupture, causing severe bleeding--and in many cases--death. For more information on AAA, click this link.
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Peripheral Arterial Disease, or PAD, affects as many as 20% of Americans aged 65 and older. Hardening of the arteries occurs when plaque narrows the arteries, affecting blood flow (figure C, left). Clogged arteries in the legs can result in pain when walking, and, left untreated, can lead to complications requiring amputation. People with PAD are at an increased risk for other vascular issues, including heart disease, aortic aneurysms, and stroke. For more information on PAD, click this link.

How much does it cost?
Lifeguard Vascular Screening is NOT covered by insurance, which is why Midwest Open Imaging offers the screening at a reduced price: $125 for all three exams.
Who should consider a Lifeguard Screening?
The Society for Vascular Surgery recommends screenings like Lifeguard for all men 65 years or older. The SVS also says screenings appear to benefit those 55 years and older with certain risk factors, including: history of hypertension, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, known cardiovascular disease, or a family history of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA).
What do I do with my report?
If you choose, Midwest Open Imaging will mail a copy of your Lifeguard Screening results to your primary care physician. If your screening unveils abnormal findings, you will be alerted that further medical evaluation, including diagnostic scans, may be needed.
How often should I be re-screened?
This is a personal decision based on your own understanding of your risk factors, and the results from your baseline Lifeguard Screening. The Society for Vascular Surgery does not have specific recommendations or guidelines for re-screening.
