X-Ray is the most frequently used form of medical imaging, having first been discovered and developed in the late 1800s.  The non-invasive, painless test is created by sending a small burst of radiation through your body onto film.  The films, when developed, show anatomy in varying shades of gray:  bone appears bright white, air is black, and all other densities are the countless shades in between.

X-Ray is most commonly used to image broken bones or spinal abnormalities.  X-Ray also clearly shows the structures of the chest and lungs, helping diagnose pneumonia, tuberculosis, or lung cancer.  Organs and soft tissue are more accurately imaged using MRI, CT, or Ultrasound.  Doctors will often order one of those follow-up exams based on what they find (or don't find) using X-Ray.

MWOI offers Walk-in X-Ray availability in Independence (Mon-Fri 8:00am-4:15pm) and Blue Springs (Mon-Fri 9:00am-5:00pm).  No appointments are necessary, though you can request an appointment by clicking the link to the upper left of this paragraph.

Preparing for your X-Ray
Most X-Rays require no preparation.  However, if you are pregnant, or think you could be pregnant, you should inform your doctor and Midwest Open Imaging before proceeding with the exam.

What to expect during your X-Ray
X-Ray is a painless exam which typically takes less than 10 minutes.  A registered technologist (RT) will position you on a table or against a wall that contains the X-Ray film.  A lead apron may be used to protect anatomy not being imaged.  The tech will take special care to use the lowest radiation dose possible while producing the best images.  You may be asked to hold your breath for a moment.  For most exams, the tech will reposition you to shoot pictures at multiple angles.  Before you leave, the developed X-Ray film is checked to be sure the radiologists have everything they need.  Occasionally, additional images are required.
